Two Veterans Achieve Badminton Triple Titles in One Event

The SA Grand Masters (55 years plus) Badminton Championships held in East London at the Nutting Hall in South Africa was a huge success as hundreds of players converged to battle for glory. Despite their age being above 55 years, these players were as competitive as ever, lifting their badminton raquets keeping the momentum rolling as making the matches close as evidenced by the scores.

Two veterans managed to win triple titles by the end of the tournament. Meryl Fourie of Border proved that everything is possible in the badminton court as she took three titles.

In the singles competition, she defeated Sedibeng’s Marti Mans with a 21-14, 21-2 scoreline. In doubles, she partnered up with Mans to defeated Southerns’ Lyn Bown and Boland’s Eda Venter. The score was 21-7, 20-22 and 21-13.

She later on partnered with Southerns Fourie’s Johan Croukamp to win the mixed doubles event. The duo defeated Bennie Gray from North West and Eda Venter with a score of 21-12, 21-14.

The mixed doubles victory paved way for the triple title victory for Croukamp who went on to win the men’s singles and men’s doubles events. In singles, Croukamp outlasted Bennie Gray 21-12 and 21-18. In doubles, he partnered with Gray to beat Gawie Le Roux and Peter Czank of North West in straight sets – 21-16, 21-14.

The winners went on to win trophies and cash prizes. The runners-up also got cash prizes for their efforts. This prestigious tournament is being held annually.
