Windsor Castle Enthralling History:

The foundation of Windsor lies in the beginning of the 7th century Saxon village of Windlesora, where the present day dwellings of Old Windsor is situated. The town of Windsor is correctly well-known as the “New Windsor” – the word “new” being used in a relative sense!

Windsor Castle was firstly erected by the renowned William the Conqueror, as a result of his invasion of England in ten-sixty-six. The original construction was assembled from timber with gravel ramparts. Windsor Castle held an understandable strategic position on a steep mound high above the River Thames, and was a division of a band of palaces all around the Capital, with the Tower of London, one day’s journey away, at its centre.

The Castle was soon re-erected in stone, & rose in significance over time. Later on Henry II put up the Round Tower & the original stone outer wall. Following the English Civil War, the structure’s main role became that of a royal house. The Castle has stayed almost completely untouched ever since the beginning of the 19th century, apart from the repair work after the fire.
